The President / GM and the CFO, with the President / GM acting as the point of contact, identified Filcro Media Staffing and Tony Filson functioning as Officer in Charge of Search to conduct a national search to identify the proper Vice President of Programming.

Filcro Media Staffing Officer in Charge of Search Tony Filson met with the CFO and GM and commenced with the search by first establishing a consensus of the CFO and GM as to the weighting of the operational, tactical, creative and strategic skills required. Based on Filcro Media Staffing’s experience with similar programming and development searches it was the opinion of Filcro Media Staffing that a proper pool of appropriate executives could be drawn from a multitude of National competitors based on the experience required and the compensation being offered.
Filcro Media Staffing’s Tony Filson was provided with organizational charts and overviews of operations, production, facilities, programming, budgets, marketing, sales and associated personnel in Boston, MA. The fact that Filcro Media Staffing reported to a single GM and not the entire ownership facilitated a clear line and the executive ultimately identified was presented during the first month of the search assignment.

The cultural awareness of every department was extremely helpful in determining how effective this Vice President of Programming would be in an environment that was not heavily layered.
This senior most programming executive was being hired as one of the top 3 executives at this Regional Sports Network (RSN) to function strategically across all lines of business.
Due to current programming and co-production issues the search required a very well rounded Vice President who would play more of a strategic role then tactical with regard to creative development, production and branding of the Network as they worked with Network Sales and “The Teams” to leverage the MLB and NHL properties owned. On the tactical side this person also had to function in Production, Operations, Post, Engineering and Traffic. Based on the client’s need for an executive who could function in a very hands-on environment it was essential that any myopic or “too specialized candidates” be eliminated from the onset.
NOTE: One of the executives presented for this search was considered the most profitable and prolific heads of TV programming in the World.
An executive capable of focusing on “operational” issues while “creatively” developing different types of quality sports and non-sports programming to strategically differentiate the Network from its competitors was essential.
The Regional Sports Network (RSN) was now looking to expand their affiliate relationships through enhanced programming and needed an executive who was accustomed to viability and ROI factors being as important as creative considerations for green-lighting programming, within a mature national broadcast company.

A veteran in the television broadcast and cable industry, this executive joined the new Network form Fox Sports. While at Fox Sports he served as Senior Vice President, Production. He was responsible for the production and operational management of all live event programming for both the network and its 10 owned and operated regional networks.
During this executive's tenure at Fox Sports he oversaw the development and production of many of the network's events, original program series and specials broadcast in the United States, Middle East, Europe, Asia and Latin America.

The Network’s senior most programming executive had identified Filcro Media Staffing to recruit the proper Executive Producer. The show was behind schedule when Filcro Media Staffing was retained so FMS was given great autonomy to function expeditiously.
An executive search committee was formed consisting of the CEO in New York and the Senior Vice President of Production from Minnesota. The Filcro Media Staffing Officer in Charge of Search Tony Filson met in New York with the CEO and the CFO prior to meeting with the Senior Vice President of Network Programming who flew into New York from Minnesota to discuss the show creatively. Filcro Media Staffing was asked to step in after all other methods had failed to identify the proper Executive Producer. The Network was on a deadline and the show was now well behind schedule. Filcro Media Staffing having a reputation for working expeditiously was given the autonomy required to move forward immediately
Tony Filson requested all tapes developed by the previous Executive Producer and observed each show in detail. Understanding where the previous executive producer had fallen short with regard to management's objectives was just as important initially as to what skills would be required for the proper person. It was obvious from the inset that the wonderfully talented host was a great resource and the proper executive producer was needed to maximize return on his notoriety. The current production values were also not indicative of the “quality” associated with the Network as a whole. The rich textures and true sense of participation for the audience was not there yet.
Based on the fact that the show pertained to “The Arts” it was an especially discriminating audience who expected every nuance to be in-line with the level of excellence expected and promoted in national and international markets. If a show pertained to music then it would not be uncommon for musicologists to be listening, the show had to be perfect in many more ways then generally accepted by commercial audiences. Serving a News-Arts-Entertainment genre is no small feat.
The general feel for the quality of programming for the Network was easy to establish with it’s rich layered sounds that were always clear when they needed to be or rising to a crescendo to put the listener in the middle of a multitude of situations that made them feel like a participant and not a voyeur
Filcro Media Staffing’s OIC Tony Filson relayed his feelings to the ESC and everyone concurred that the search was headed in the proper direction.
Filcro Media Staffing also reviewed all financial, funding and budgets to identify a new Executive Producer that has managed the proper mix of talent, co-pro and operational expenses. With more co-pro becoming common place in this environment, it was essential that this new Executive Producer be able to work out “the deals” prior to making the creative commitments.
Filcro Media Staffing’s OIC Tony Filson was also aware of cross-platform initiative that the Network was undertaking with regard to Broadband and from a creative and business perspective this person would have to champion resources that could ultimately open new revenue streams by attracting a new audience to the show and the Network itself.
The diversity of the hard skill sets required was actually easy to work with because there was no latitude to be expressed. Listening to the works of numerous Executive Producers and placing yourself in the position of such a discriminating audience was an endless task. This required many hours of listening and critiquing executive producers. Getting a tactical feel for why they did things and understanding their motivations and methodologies creatively, was very telling. With so many shows to be produced, we needed to identify an Executive Producer who understood “formula”. Some candidates were terrific creatively but lacked the business acumen to be Executive Producers and then those that were EP’s, fell short on the unique feel TF was looking for, for a show, that was meant to open a new world to a wanting and waiting audience.

This national effort was quite extensive based on the multitude of Executive Producers and also talented Senior Producers who could have the business and creative skills, to take the next step. The firm also utilized international production standards from two EU and Middle East executive searches recently conducted for similar “Arts Programming”.
Filcro Media Staffing ultimately identified the new Executive Producer by classifying “sourced” creative content received into four categories and establishing profiles of “methodologies” for each Executive Producer that Tony Filson felt had the creative abilities to make the show a success.
Tony Filson’s experience with prior senior production searches knew that if the new EP could not articulate “formula” in a concise way as to how they establish success creatively, they could not lead on a business level or direct creatively through co-pro deals. After profiling over 38 qualified executive producers from a pool of over 100 candidates, it became exceptionally clear that one person was standing out who everyone overlooked from the prior search. As Tony Filson continued to listen to more demo tapes, source more producers and read more BIO’s, he knew that the organization had to attract one particular EP who was the show’s “ideal” Executive Producer, and they did.

The Senior Vice President of Marketing was aware of Filcro Media Staffing (FMS) through her prior employment with a global financial institution where FMS had successfully recruited executive producers and those in charge of their global TV Network and corporate communications environments.
The Senior Vice President and the Senior Director of Video Services played an active role in articulating the business goals that needed to be achieved through this executive search. Expansion of media product offerings and raising production standards were key based on the sophistication of the firm’s clients.

Filcro Media Staffing proceeded by identifying the top executive producers from the top rated financial shows in both domestic and international markets.
An initial search universe of over 120 potential candidates of executive producers, senior producers and executives in charge of production was compiled and needed to be vetted. Based on compensation, geographics, culture and the specific career ecology of those initially identified, the pool of appropriate candidates was brought down to a manageable 26.
The culture of the client company was unique and as talented as the potential pool of 26 was we had to focus now on the soft skills and a person’s ability to transform the show into a success while mentoring staff through the production and post standards that needed to be raised. This brought our pool to 12 candidates.
Of the 12 remaining candidates we felt that 6 were ideal to make the transition in the period of time required and express the longevity desired to assure that there would be continuity in the work environment and for the show. We ultimately picked 3 producers from two of the top rated financial shows on television and presented them as 1st tiered candidates. Two (2) remaining 2nd tier candidates could also have been considered viable but there was a deadline to begin production that precluded these producers.

Officer in charge of search Tony Filson (FMS-TF) commenced the search by first establishing a consensus of the search committee in a phone conference that included RFE/RL executives from Prague and Washington, DC. The committee was clear, focused and committed to the identification of an executive that could function as a change agent. It was clear that the organization’s reputation for journalistic excellence was paramount to the search. An executive with a proven history of building, maintaining and growing an international news organization and their audience based on journalistic integrity, and quality programming was the unanimous consensus of all.
FMS was provided with organizational charts, assimilation and dissemination objectives, budgets, strategic interests and overviews of technologies and human resources in the various geographic regions relevant to the search. Research for universe compilation was extensive within global NGO’s and broadcasters. As a testament to RFE/RL’s senior management and their strategic understanding of global news organizations, it was a “wish list” of one RFE/RL executive that ultimately led to the the recruitment of the executive producer hired.
Initial research in the United States, Canada, Asia, The Middle East and Europe was completed in (4) four weeks with candidate identification completed ahead of schedule.
Technology acumen played a great role in the identification process. Identifying news executives on an executive producer, senior executive producer or bureau chief level with hands on experience managing advanced technology initiatives with the language skills and scope of regional coverage required was imperative.
Responsible for the English-language news and information products from and about the organizations broadcast region and 28 language services that are delivered across multiple media platforms (Internet, radio, TV).
Manage a large staff of 60+ that provides breaking news, analyses, features, and other products for broadcast programs, on-line web sites, and print publications.
Responsible for editorial control
Work organization and allocation, performance management, training, and problem resolution; as well as for short and long-range planning and goal setting through: conduct of daily story conferences and editorial meetings, effectively dealing with breaking news stories, and planning for enterprise news, and special projects and events.
Minimum 10 years’ related professional journalism experience required.
