Tony Filson,  Reporting to TV Network President & GM

Client  A noted regional sports network with cross ownership of a Major League Baseball MLB team and a National Hockey League NHL team located in Boston, MA - USA.

The interests and corporate ownership of the Regional Sports Network RSN range from noted private entertainment executives to a major international print and media conglomerate.

The firm enjoys regional market dominance with sports team(s), sports venue, sports broadcasting and newspaper holdings. Through MSO, Satellite and Broadband distribution the client company was seeking to enhance and expand their National presence through the development and production of additional sports and sports oriented television programming.

Client Situation The President / GM as well as the CFO of the Network proceeded to identify an executive search firm to conduct a national search to identify a new Vice President of Programming. The President / GM based in Boston, MA met with the Filcro Media Staffing Office in Charge, Tony Filson in New York prior to retaining the firm and subsequently invited Filcro Media Staffing to Boston, MA to meet with the CFO and review the Network's facilities and relevant staff that would be under the direction of the new Vice President of Programming.

The President / GM and the CFO, with the President / GM acting as the point of contact, identified Filcro Media Staffing and Tony Filson functioning as Officer in Charge of Search to conduct a national search to identify the proper Vice President of Programming.

Filcro Media Staffing is Retained

Filcro Media Staffing Officer in Charge of Search Tony Filson met with the CFO and GM and commenced with the search by first establishing a consensus of the CFO and GM as to the weighting of the operational, tactical, creative and strategic skills required. Based on Filcro Media Staffing’s experience with similar programming and development searches it was the opinion of Filcro Media Staffing that a proper pool of appropriate executives could be drawn from a multitude of National competitors based on the experience required and the compensation being offered.

Filcro Media Staffing’s Tony Filson was provided with organizational charts and overviews of operations, production, facilities, programming, budgets, marketing, sales and associated personnel in Boston, MA. The O&D Charting, budgets, equipment lists and marketing materials provided by the CFO provided great insight into what synergistic changes would need to be initiated by the new Vice President of Programming to meet projected programming goals.

The CFO and GM afforded Filcro Media Staffing autonomy during the initial phase of universe compilation and tiering The established hierarchy of desired skill sets and industry experience during universe compilation and tiering only changed once, with the key factors being a balance of development, operational, production, strategic and programming acumen that could be “attracted” based on compensation. The fact that Filcro Media Staffing reported to a single GM and not the entire ownership facilitated a clear line and the executive ultimately identified was presented during the first month of the search assignment.

Filcro Media Staffing was fortunate to have such an active GM and CFO participate during the search. The GM had over 17 years of experience with the Network. The cultural awareness of every department was extremely helpful in determining how effective this Vice President of Programming would be in an environment that was not heavily layered.

This senior most programming executive was being hired as one of the top 3 executives at this Regional Sports Network (RSN) to function strategically across all lines of business.

Due to current programming and co-production issues the search required a very well rounded Vice President who would play more of a strategic role then tactical with regard to creative development, production and branding of the Network as they worked with Network Sales and “The Teams” to leverage the MLB and NHL properties owned.  On the tactical side this person also had to function in Production, Operations, Post, Engineering and Traffic.  A person with very diverse skill sets and great scope would be required to handle all these responsibilities.

Some of the biggest challenges facing the new Senior Vice President were

  • Change Management
  • Best Practices
  • Mentoring
  • Production, Post & Operations Facilities Build-Out
  • Creative Development
  • Financial Management and Budget Controls of Programming and Production Costs
  • Internal and External Marketing and Sales Relationships with Programming & Production
  • Brand Development through On-Air Production Values
  • MLB and NHL Ownership
  • Optimize Sports Marketing Across Media Platforms

The Filcro Media Staffing Recruitment Solution

Tony Filson of Filcro Media Staffing proceeded to Identify the "best in industry" Vice Presidents of Programming, Production, Operations and Senior Executive Producers with a proven record of success within and without of the Sports genre. Based on the client’s need for an executive who could function in a very hands-on environment it was essential that any myopic or “too specialized candidates” be eliminated from the onset.

NOTE:  One of the executives presented for this search was considered the most profitable and prolific heads of TV programming in the World.

An executive capable of focusing on “operational” issues while “creatively” developing different types of quality sports and non-sports programming to strategically differentiate the Network from its competitors was essential.

The Regional Sports Network (RSN) was now looking to expand their affiliate relationships through enhanced programming and needed an executive who was accustomed to viability and ROI factors being as important as creative considerations for green-lighting programming, within a mature national broadcast company.

TV Sports Programming and Production Executive Search Firms for TV Programming and Production Operations Recrutiment

With such unusual access to two professional sports teams along with full production, operations and development autonomy, it was important that this new VP be able to mentor staff through every phase of the process to institute “Best Practices” that would enhance the operational, production and creative staff to the point that they could quickly become part of the “enhanced” product sought by management (Baseball and Hockey Team Ownership). In order to convince the associated teams, owners, sales and marketing heads that cooperation on every level would intimately benefit everyone concerned, it would take a mature broadcasting executive who could function tactically and strategically in every function as they developed new synergies across varied business lines

With the Network about to initiate a new build-out of production and broadcast operation facilities, this executive also had to have strong engineering and operations capabilities with regard to distribution, production and post-production facilities. The recent addition of full HD capabilities and solid relationships with satellite and MSO distribution for same, required that this executive be able to capitalize on this great expenditure going forward creatively and technically

Almost every Major TV Network, Cable Network and developer of sports programming was profiled for this search. This executive search was a sophisticated and extensive recruitment assignment to assure that every possible option was available to the Network. The work completed brought forward the key sports programming and production executives from every major media market in the United States.  The client specifically asked to choose form a broad spectrum of competitors that already enjoyed the type of distribution and programming initiatives they were looking to implement

The GM set exceptionally high standards for this person and wanted an executive who felt at ease with a diverse scope of responsibility that were not the norm at larger TV Networks   The GM kept clear sales and marketing goals in mind through the entire identification process. The GM never wavered or compromised in insisting that this new executive be as strong strategically as he was tactically and many talented sports and non-sports programming and production executives and executive producers were passed over until his “ideal” was identified.

The Network’s senior most programming executive had identified Filcro Media Staffing to recruit the proper Executive Producer. The show was behind schedule when Filcro Media Staffing was retained so FMS was given great autonomy to function expeditiously.

Client Situation

An executive search committee was formed consisting of the CEO in New York and the Senior Vice President of Production from Minnesota. The balance of a board member on the committee offered a strong cross-section of business, strategic and creative concerns to vocalize their desired skills in the new Executive Producer. Of great concern were creative efficacy based on the high visibility and notoriety of the show’s host who needed a very strong executive producer to manage creatively

The executive search committee (ESC) identified Filcro Media Staffing (FMS) and Tony Filson (TF) functioning as Officer in Charge of Search after conducting their own national identification efforts to identify the ideal executive as under “Client Situation”. TF met with ESC members individually and with the committee as whole.

Filcro Media Staffing is Retained

The Filcro Media Staffing Officer in Charge of Search Tony Filson met in New York with the CEO and the CFO prior to meeting with the Senior Vice President of Network Programming who flew into New York from Minnesota to discuss the show creatively. Filcro Media Staffing was asked to step in after all other methods had failed to identify the proper Executive Producer. The Network was on a deadline and the show was now well behind schedule. Filcro Media Staffing having a reputation for working expeditiously was given the autonomy required to move forward immediately

Tony Filson requested all tapes developed by the previous Executive Producer and observed each show in detail. Understanding where the previous executive producer had fallen short with regard to management's objectives was just as important initially as to what skills would be required for the proper person. It was obvious from the inset that the wonderfully talented host was a great resource and the proper executive producer was needed to maximize return on his notoriety. The current production values were also not indicative of the “quality” associated with the Network as a whole.  The rich textures and true sense of participation for the audience was not there yet.

Based on the fact that the show pertained to “The Arts” it was an especially discriminating audience who expected every nuance to be in-line with the level of excellence expected and promoted in national and international markets. If a show pertained to music then it would not be uncommon for musicologists to be listening, the show had to be perfect in many more ways then generally accepted by commercial audiences.  Serving a News-Arts-Entertainment genre is no small feat.

The general feel for the quality of programming for the Network was easy to establish with it’s rich layered sounds that were always clear when they needed to be or rising to a crescendo to put the listener in the middle of a multitude of situations that made them feel like a participant and not a voyeur

Filcro Media Staffing’s OIC Tony Filson relayed his feelings to the ESC and everyone concurred that the search was headed in the proper direction.

Filcro Media Staffing also reviewed all financial, funding and budgets to identify a new Executive Producer that has managed the proper mix of talent, co-pro and operational expenses. With more co-pro becoming common place in this environment, it was essential that this new Executive Producer be able to work out “the deals” prior to making the creative commitments.

Filcro Media Staffing’s OIC Tony Filson was also aware of cross-platform initiative that the Network was undertaking with regard to Broadband and from a creative and business perspective this person would have to champion resources that could ultimately open new revenue streams by attracting a new audience to the show and the Network itself.

The diversity of the hard skill sets required was actually easy to work with because there was no latitude to be expressed. Listening to the works of numerous Executive Producers and placing yourself in the position of such a discriminating audience was an endless task. This required many hours of listening and critiquing executive producers. Getting a tactical feel for why they did things and understanding their motivations and methodologies creatively, was very telling. With so many shows to be produced, we needed to identify an Executive Producer who understood “formula”. Some candidates were terrific creatively but lacked the business acumen to be Executive Producers and then those that were EP’s, fell short on the unique feel TF was looking for, for a show, that was meant to open a new world to a wanting and waiting audience.

Challenges Facing the New Executive Producer (EP)

  • Working Behind Schedule - Based on Past Production Performance
  • Developing the Show’s Host Creatively
  • Raising Production Standards
  • Constantly Evoking Interest With an Educated Audience
  • Financial Management and Budget Controls
  • Vendor Partnerships and Broadband Relationships
  • Co-pro Deals
  • Expanding the Show’s Demographic(s)
  • Enhancing Multicast Cross Platform Dissemination

Filcro Media Staffing’s Recruitment Solution

Filcro Media Staffing proceeded to Identify the "leading producers" involved in every aspect of the arts from television, performing arts, news, music and radio. This national effort was quite extensive based on the multitude of Executive Producers and also talented Senior Producers who could have the business and creative skills, to take the next step. The firm also utilized international production standards from two EU and Middle East executive searches recently conducted for similar “Arts Programming”.

Recruiters of Radio Executive Producers that have won peabody awards Filcro Media StaffingFilcro Media Staffing ultimately identified the new Executive Producer by classifying “sourced” creative content received into four categories and establishing profiles of “methodologies” for each Executive Producer that Tony Filson felt had the creative abilities to make the show a success.

Tony Filson’s experience with prior senior production searches knew  that if the new EP could not articulate “formula” in a concise way as to how they establish success creatively, they could not lead on a business level or direct creatively through co-pro deals. After profiling over 38 qualified executive producers from a pool of over 100 candidates, it became exceptionally clear that one person was standing out who everyone overlooked from the prior search. As Tony Filson continued to listen to more demo tapes, source more producers and read more BIO’s, he knew that the organization had to attract one particular EP who was the show’s “ideal” Executive Producer, and they did.

Filcro Media Staffing is Retained

The Senior Vice President of Marketing was aware of Filcro Media Staffing (FMS) through her prior employment with a global financial institution where FMS had successfully recruited executive producers and those in charge of their global TV Network and corporate communications environments.

The Senior Vice President and the Senior Director of Video Services played an active role in articulating the business goals that needed to be achieved through this executive search.  Expansion of media product offerings and raising production standards were key based on the sophistication of the firm’s clients.

A syndicated half-hour TV show produced by the firm needed to be re-energized and brought up to the standards of other shows appearing on FOX, CNBC and Bloomberg.  The objective was to identify an executive producer who could take financial programming to the next step while maintaining the credibility, entertainment factor and conservative demeanor the firm was seeking.  The show needed a pace that would keep audiences engaged without offending sensibilities. The credibility factor was paramount as global analysts appearing on the show each week from varied global markets required a venue that matched the respect given each financial institutions they represented.

Some of the Challenges Facing the New Executive Producer:

  • Raising Production Standards
  • Producing Show Segments that Engage Audiences
  • Re-purposing Content for Interactive and DVD Distribution
  • Producing Content for Domestic and International Markets
  • Maintaining Financial Controls on Production Budgets
  • Bringing Current Production and Post Staff up to Network Standards

The Filcro Media Staffing Recruitment Solution

Filcro Media Staffing proceeded by identifying the top executive producers from the top rated financial shows in both domestic and international markets.

An initial search universe of over 120 potential candidates of executive producers, senior producers and executives in charge of production was compiled and needed to be vetted. Based on compensation, geographics, culture and the specific career ecology of those initially identified, the pool of appropriate candidates was brought down to a manageable 26.

The culture of the client company was unique and as talented as the potential pool of 26 was we had to focus now on the soft skills and a person’s ability to transform the show into a success while mentoring staff through the production and post standards that needed to be raised.  This brought our pool to 12 candidates.

Of the 12 remaining candidates we felt that 6 were ideal to make the transition in the period of time required and express the longevity desired to assure that there would be continuity in the work environment and for the show.  We ultimately picked 3 producers from two of the top rated financial shows on television and presented them as 1st tiered candidates.  Two (2) remaining 2nd tier candidates could also have been considered viable but there was a deadline to begin production that precluded these producers.

New Executive Producer Recruited

The new Executive Producer was from one of the top 3 rated financial news shows in America.

Relocating from New York City to Florida was accomplished in little time and the firm was able to meet their show deadline and meet all their objects.

The Executive Producer became acclimated to the company culture and is a vital member of the firm’s Programming, Development and Production team.

The Filcro Media Staffing Recruitment Solution

Filcro Media Staffing proceeded to Identify News Anchors and On-Air personalities with strong production acumen in the U.S. , U.K. and the Middle East with specific broadcasting experience that mirrored The Networks’ objectives and markets. Meticulous review of journalistic, language, press credentials and editorial skills was laborious.

Extensive reviews of demo tapes, writing samples and news topics in Arabic and English were performed with candidates from the United States, Middle East, North Africa, Canada and France

Directly recruiting from all the “Industry and Sector” targets initially determined for universe compilation for the search was extensive and required multiple individuals working in unison to bring forward our ideal candidates.  As exceptional English and Classical Arabic writing skills were required as well as on camera articulation, the vetting process required that demo reels and writing samples be given equal consideration. Tony Filson functioning as Officer in Charge determined geographic, political and cultural acumen to assure that the new News Anchor could be the collaborative partner the Executive Producer was seeking.

Given the amount of travel required and rigorous production schedules for multiple time zones we also need a news anchor / producer who could fully devote their time and efforts to their career.

U.S. based media, marketing and advertising firm devoted to the financial industries.  The firm manages over $660,000,000 USD of diversified TV, Radio and Online advertising for some the world’s largest and most respected financial institutions.

Client Situation

The CMO identified Filcro Media Staffing to conduct 3 searches relevant to the expansion of the firm’s media and creative offerings for America's largest financial institutions.

The current media spend at $660,000,000 was sizable.  The CEO and CMO retained Filcro Media Staffing to increase revenue to over One Billion USD at an aggressive cadence.

Tony Filson was asked to function as officer in charge of search to coordinate the identification, recruitment, attraction and relocation of the media executives required to grow the business as he had worked with the clients customers to identify their internal global heads of media, marketing and communications.

The recruitment of the proper radio executive producer would be vital to meeting the company's immediate and longterm business goals.

Filcro Media Staffing is Retained

Filcro Media Staffing proceeded with a close examination of the firm’s current resources devoted to cultivating and managing the entire production process from business, technical and creative perspectives.

Since Filcro Media Staffing was also charged with recruiting a new Media Director and Associate Producer this Executive Producer was a critical hire for the CMO that would directly affect the firm’s revenue goals.

With over $660,000,000 in current media spend the proper executive producer would have to have had experience building a major market highly successful radio franchise broadcasting across multiple audio and video media platforms.

Based on the budgets, the search started in New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta.

None of the candidates approached for this executive search were actively seeking employment.   Additionally, it required an extensive network developed by Filcro Media Staffing to get direct contact with some the most prolific and successful executive producers in the history of broadcasting, from a financial perspective.

Current contract restraints, relocation, co-ownership of a media brand and other issues were initial hurdles in attracting and recruiting the caliber of executive producer required.

Understanding who we wanted was critical.  However, learning about the personal and career ecologies of each executive we targeted was of equally importance.   Bringing this search to fruition was about lifestyle and transitioning to a market or geographic none of the executive producers had probably ever contemplated.

Challenges Facing the New Executive Producer (EP)

  • Establishing New Production Standards
  • Honing Production and Post Workflow
  • Collaborating With Financial Industry CMO’s
  • Hiring New Production and Post Staff to Implement Changes
  • Instituting Enhanced Media Metrics and Analytics

Successful Executive Producer Recruited

An industry veteran with a proven track record of success monetizing some the most successful media franchises in the United States.

His career spanning with Cumulus, Citadel, Cox and ABC expresses the proven experience the client was seeking in building media franchises and bringing about continuity in cultures similar to the environment the CMO was seeking to create.

From an operational, creative and programming perspective the new executive producer had built impressive media brands but was also noted for building people.  The work environments under his leadership were noted as positive places to work that mentored and developed a number of executive producers that went on to experience great success.

On strategic and tactical levels this executive producer was a great asset in producing and monetizing highly profitable programming.  Stressing his tactical achievements was important to everyone as a hands-on approach would be needed to implement so many changes in a brief period of time.  This was an executive who could be a true change agent in an organization taking a big step to meet or exceed their goal of one-billion dollars in media management for a sophisticated client base consisting of the world's most respected financial institutions.

The new executive producer has made a quick and seamless transition to the new company.
The CMO and CEO are very pleased.

Filcro Media Staffing reporting to the Vice President of Network News
Tony Filson - Officer in charge of this executive search

Major U.S multinational media conglomerate broadcasting news in US, MENA, EU, ASIA & LATAM markets. With broad global distribution this TV Network’s News division broadcasts in multiple languages across (6) six media platforms.

Offering high quality journalistic standards and high production values, this 24/7 TV News Network offers diverse formats and news special(s) with compelling programming relevant to the diverse global communities the TV Network serves.

To recruit and relocate a senior producer for U.S. and MENA coverage responsible for the journalistic and creative development, production and content quality of each show.  The ideal was to identify a producer who could conduct fresh, informative, creative, compelling shows, ensuring balanced content consistent with the journalistic standards of the Network.

The standards for creative vision, production values and audience participation of the programs on and off-air were set high.  In-line with the vice president's vision of the programming to be produced were award winning internal examples of some of the highest rated shows in U.S. and MENA market history.

As well as overseeing, gathering, writing and producing each show this senior producer would mentor other producers to build a strong team for 24/7 U.S. & MENA coverage to equal the US, LATAM, EU and ASIA news bureaus coverage.

Client Situation

The Vice President of programming has searched internally and the management acumen to lead this group was not apparent within the Network’s U.S. or MENA news bureaus.

The Network had utilized Filcro Media Staffing in the past for programming, executive producer and line producer executive search assignments in the MENA, EU and The Americas as well as recruiting senior leadership to run their largest news bureaus.

Based on show delivery obligations and air-dates the Vice President of programming needed this search assignment to be a priority.  Filcro Media Staffing’s Officer in Charge of Search, Tony Filson, conducted similar international executive searches for the Network at an aggressive cadence to expeditiously bring each search to fruition.

Subsequent to Filcro Media Staffing being retained

Filcro Media Staffing with Tony Filson as Officer in Charge of Search  participated with Network programming and human resources to obtain nuance and establish interviewing availability in Washington, DC and the Middle East.  A solid understanding of the Vice President's succession plan was articulated so the Network would not be in this critical situation in the future with the full support of human resources and the Network President.

Similar Middle East and U.S. / MENA production searches were conducted recently and the compensation offered was very close to competing TV Networks seeking the same demographic(s).

An immediate group of senior producers were brought forward from MENA, US and UK markets that offered the growth the VP of Programming was seeking for bureau coverage.  At no point did a conflict occur with any candidate presented with the client company or current searches being conducted for other news organizations.

The first round of interviews in Washington, DC and the MENA were solidified in two weeks and a second round with travel to the Middle East was accomplished in an additional two to three weeks based on visa requirements and consulate interviews for each producer.  From the time Filcro Media Staffing was retained to the start date of the new news senior producer, (8) weeks had passed.  Tony Filson had met the cadence desired by the VP of Programming and brought this search to fruition at the aggressive cadence required.

Some of the challenges facing the new production executive

  • Develop news reports, features and monitor global news events independently while also taking direction from the Editor in Chief.
  • Supervise show staff members and on-air talent to build a cohesive team that could work together in pre-production and production to set new production standards for the Network in U.S. and MENA markets.
  • Re-purpose U.S. and MENA market shows for global distribution for TV, Online, Mobile and OEM platforms.
  • Based on breaking stories and news events, reposition staff and resources in the MENA and U.S. to assure Network coverage
  • Work to upgrade show graphics, chyron and control room communication standards for studio and remote news broadcasts.
  • Work with On Air Promotions to assure they have the materials needed to build audiences and insert timely relevant content.
  • Work closely with Anchors and at time talent management for smooth daily operations and continuity of broadcasts.

Filcro Media Staffing’s Recruitment Solution

Filcro Media Staffing proceeded to Identify global news organizations with specific "production" and “programming” environments that produce quality content similar to the client’s needs in the U.S. and MENA for global distribution.

Recruiting the ideal senior news producer from U.S. ; MENA and U.K. markets offered a great deal of diversity.  However, the language skills required were not negotiable and ultimately the producer recruited by Tony Filson spoke and wrote four languages fluently.

After viewing each producers work, examining them as journalists and broadcasting executives, it became apparent that our ideal for the search was based in the MENA and had prior U.S. and EU Network news experience.  Of the numerous producers identified, screened, and recruited, four were ultimately presented and the VP of Programming narrowed it down to two candidates.  The process of determining which one of the two candidates would be hired was extensive.  Meetings took place with those involved in New York, Washington DC and the MENA.  With both senior producers being exceptional journalists and broadcasting executives, ultimately the producer who could relate best to the targeted demographics in US/MENA/EU markets was offered the position, accepted and transitioned well to the new corporate culture.

The Successful Production Executive Recruited

The new senior producer met the VP’s expectations on every front and has developed a world class news bureau production environment that is a positive place to work for: on-air talent, journalists and production / post personnel.

The shows and specials produced have increased ratings on-air and online and the associated on-air promotions have even increased ratings of surrounding programming.

As a producer she brings a wealth of experience as a subject matter expert of all things MENA / US and broad acumen to increase production standards at every turn.  As a journalist she has impeccable credentials with a noted history of awards for compelling honest and straight forward programming.  As a broadcasting executive she is clearly a Sr. Producer / Managing Producer if not Executive Producer in some environments and knows the intricacies of developing, producing, promoting and building audiences in competitive international markets on budget and on-time while mentoring staff.

This executive search was brought to fruition based on the cooperation of everyone involved.

Human resources, the hiring manager and the officer in charge all made concerted efforts to meet the aggressive deadline established at the inception of the assignment.  Working in (3) three different time zones and involving staff in New York, Washington DC and the Middle East , everything was coordinated perfectly to assure that the attraction phase once put in place would utilize the resources of everyone involved to assure success.

Filcro Media Staffing always looks forward to identifying talented producers in news, entertainment, reality, advertising, on air promo, sports and corporate environments.  Working with executives who bring the business, technical and creative aspects of our industry together is always rewarding.
